Brown & Sharpe
Brown & Sharpe- Part of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence
One of the oldest manufacture of precision measuring tools, Brown and Sharpe started in 1833 in the town of Providence Rhode Island. David Brown and his son Joseph led the company with innovative inventions like a automatic machine for marking the graduations on precision rules and gear cutting engines. By 1872 the company was so successful it had to move into a 66,000 square foot manufacturing facility which even by today's standards is very large. And this was in the 19th Century. Very soon after Brown & Sharpe became the world's largest mfg. of precision measuring tools and machine tools. According to machine tool history, Brown & Sharpe was directly responsible for the wide spread sales and distribution of micrometers, lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and various other tools that were starting to take hold in America at the time. The company hit its peak during World War II employing over 11,000 people. They were supplying the U.S. Armed Forces and government with tools and supplies. Through those years, Brown & Sharpe was well known for making calipers and micrometers to tolerances that were not available by other companies. These tools were highly accurate for the time and would still be considered a quality precision measuring instrument even in today's standards. In 2001 the company was acquired by Hexagon Metrology company and to this day is still producing some of the best hand tools around. Penn Tool Co., is proud to supply Brown & Sharpe line of best micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gages and other precision measuring instruments.
